Website vs web app: what’s the difference?

A website mainly helps people understand and act. A web app lets users perform ongoing tasks with accounts, data and workflows. Many businesses need a strong website first and only a narrow application behind it.

Choose a website when

Your main goals are discovery, credibility, content, enquiries, bookings or sales through established tools.

  • Visitors mostly read and compare
  • The primary action is a form, call, booking or checkout
  • Content and search visibility matter most

Choose a web app when

Users need personalised state, repeated workflows or data that changes for each account.

  • Dashboards and user accounts
  • Internal operational workflows
  • Marketplaces or complex quoting
  • Custom reporting and permissions

Avoid building software too early

If a form plus an existing scheduling or payment tool solves the problem, custom software may add cost without advantage. Build the smallest system that creates evidence.
